Your Nonprofit Location Has Very Little Bearing on Your Fundraising Success

Image of a city skyline showing that the location of the nonprofit makes no difference on your fundraising success

A funny conversation I have every few months….

(For context, I serve organizations all over the country but I run my consultancy out of Chicagoland.)

“Sherry, our board wants us to work with ‘a local consultant’ who knows the donors in our market”. Followed by:

“New York donors are different from others.”

“Charleston philanthropy requires a different approach.”

“Boston donors want to only hear X.”

“Texas donors need Y.”

Can I be frank?

Your location has very little bearing on your fundraising success.

With years of experience, I can tell you that your:

➡️ annual budgeting approach is keeping you from growing & blocking your team from reaching their goal.

➡️ donors are confused and don't know they need their money (because of how they talk/write about what they do).

➡️ staff and leadership need skills training on providing donor experiences that yield 5-, 6-, and 7- figure gifts.

➡️ board is simply doing the wrong things to help generate revenue.

This is what needs fixed no matter what city or state you’re in.

The problems behind securing steady unrestricted revenue for gen-operating expenses get solved at the foundational level first. That's why the location of your org is irrelevant in my work.

To become investment-level ready, Sherry helps leaders see their revenue potential and helps them see what may be blocking donors from giving in this way. Sherry’s clients know how to attract larger donors by solving the funding challenges at the root of the issue.

As a result of learning her methodology, Sherry’s clients become sustainable, diversify revenue, and know how to add significant amounts gen-ops revenue to their budgets. But mostly, their development departments and board have transformed into high-ROI revenue generators – aligning their hours with relational dollars and set free from the limitations of transactional fundraising.

Sherry attributes the success of her business to her passion for modeling radical confidence to the future CEOs in her house - her two college-aged daughters.
