The truth about using fundraising pitch decks . . .

The other day I saw a post that read something like “A fancy pitch deck doesn't get major donors to give more money.”

Do I agree with that statement?

Ummm…only, somewhat.

Here’s why:

In the nonprofit world, so many fundraisers kinda found themselves in fundraising. You know, they came up through the program side, moved over from corporate, or were really good at writing grants and found themselves leading the department. That’s cool and frankly one of the most favorite parts of my job.

I find that fundraisers need something in hand to help them lead donors to the best gift.

So, why do I train many of my fundraisers to use pitch decks?
✅Well, they’re subject matter experts at something other than fundraising.
✅So, despite knowing everything about the programs and mission, they need help smoothly transitioning into the solicitation.
✅ In essence, they need a bit of a crutch leading donors through investment-level conversations.
✅ When my fundraisers learn how to use their decks as simple prompts in donor conversations, they build their confidence
✅ With confidence they naturally pivot into wealth conversations and stop leaving money on the table.
✅ Then 4-figure donors become 5-figure . . and 5- become 6-figure donors.

❓So, does a fancy pitch deck get major donors to give more money?
NO.

❓But, does a pitch deck prompt fundraisers through donor conversations who are learning to solicit for major gifts?
YES.
