Nonprofit Organizations and Employee Salaries

Last month I spoke to four nonprofit leaders who talked about their desperation to raise salaries to retain key employees and attract new ones. 

 

Of course we all support this. So, what’s the problem?

 

(I don’t need to tell you it’s a deep issue at the root of the nonprofit sector.)

 

From my vantage point, here’s the equation I see: 

Hang-over from the decades old myth that “nonprofits don’t pay well”

The messy intersection of money and the morality of mission-based work

Decades of budgets getting approved without REAL salaries in the budget

Nonprofit development teams not knowing how to raise enough gen-ops to RAISE to the real budget.

Now years of under-investment in staff, the mountain seems too big. How would you give staff a 30% raise across the board?

The solution? 

Create an annual budget that reflects your REAL NEED. Then invest in equipping your development team to operate in a HIGH-ROI model and RAISE to that need.

 

I know. That seems like an oversimplification. But, it’s kinda not. It can be that simple. But, you’ve got to invest in equipping your entire team to see your revenue challenges from a different perspective.

 

(And, you might need to ramp up your overhead greatly over two years to do this. That might mean programs stay steady. It’s ok. Trust me.)
