Nonprofit Fundraising and Major Donors

I had an Ah-ha moment the other day. I had this realization that many Board Members (and fundraisers) don’t actually know WHO a major donor is.

What I mean is….Too often I hear “I don’t know any major donors.”

First off, this isn’t true. We all do. I promise you.

Secondly, a major donor doesn’t have to resemble Oprah. Live in a mansion. They’re not always the CEO of a big company. They might not have a DAF or 2nd home. Too often, they aren't the ones in the room with the nicest designer handbag.

Lots of major donors are just every-day generous people who are mission-aligned with YOUR mission. They are people whose life’s story has intersected YOUR mission in some way. They actually care and would give more money if they knew about YOUR organization and understood its financial need.

Board Members: Before you claim that you “don’t know any major donors”...I’d ask that you facilitate 5-10 conversations between the development team and the normal people in your network about your mission, its impact, and the lives being changed because of it.

Typically, this is a shocking exercise.
