Nonprofit Leaders: What is the average age of your board?

What’s the average age of your board?

(And why does that even matter?)

In my recent conversation on my podcast with Julia C. Patrick, we really dug into the issue of the increasing number of board members stepping down (or, unfortunately, passing away).

Who will be there to replace them? Certainly not cohorts of the same age, or at least not enough of them.

The answer to this growing problem lies in next-gen boards. Namely, the Millennial generation. These individuals have the potential to bring a LOT to the (boardroom) table, thanks to their innovative and unique perspectives on what nonprofits need to be doing differently—or doing better.

For instance, Julia provided a great example about kids and school lunch. Rather than saying, “Oh, kids going hungry is a big bummer, for sure, but we’re going to help who we can,” Millennials are intent on finding a viable solution.

They also demand data and metrics to make informed decisions. For Millennials, it’s not just about raising money. It’s about what the organization is going to do with it to make a difference.

Want to get the full scope of why next-gen board members are posed for greatness? Julia and I hash it out in this podcast episode

PLUS, you get to learn more about Julia’s origin story and her journey to the nonprofit world. Hope you enjoy!
