Matching Major Donor Gifts through Relational Fundraising

Has this ever happened to you?

My client secured a $100K gift from an individual donor.

The only catch? The donor wanted to use it as a matching gift to inspire others to give. Totally fine, except the donor got upset when he didn’t see email blasts or social media posts promoting it.

The #1 thing we did? Educate the donor.

You see, my client has become a rockstar fundraiser:

🎊He’s grown his organization over the past few years. Like, a lot.
🎊Never works more than 40 hours a week.
🎊Regularly secures 5- and 6-figure gifts.
🎊Confidently reaches the end of the YE with cash in the bank.

He’s an A+ student . . . exquisitely implementing the methodology I teach. And a big part of my program is aligning HOURS with the activities that FULLY FUND your mission.

He’s learned how to align his time with the activities that attract and grow his Top 30 donors (which yield 50-75% of his annual revenue).

Why? Because his TIME is THE MOST valuable asset to the organization. That means he doesn’t spend much of his time on transactional blasts & social media appeals.

So, when the matching donor COULDN’T SEE this activity, he simply didn’t understand the greater strategy.

My client had already secured the majority of the match through deep 1:1 relationships & investment-level conversations. And those people who give that sized gift need to be asked in-person. Not on social media.

Don’t be afraid to educate your donors about fundraising. They aren’t experts at it.

The donor? In the end he totally understood and agreed with the strategy.

$200K secured. That’s how do you a match.
